How to Zone Your Child’s Bedroom to Fit All Their Interests & Hobbies

Trying to figure out how you can create a space that fits all your child’s diverse interests and hobbies? One way to achieve this is by zoning their room, dividing it into distinct areas that cater to various activities and needs. Here’s a peek into to a project I worked on designing a pre-teen girl's bedroom, where I incorporated zones to accommodate her specific interests and passions.

1. The Girl-Boss Zone:

My client has a zest for learning and creativity, so I set out to craft a space that reflected her "Girl-Boss" spirit. At one end of the room, a dedicated desk for homework, drawing, and personal projects defined this space. A sleek and functional desk, paired with a comfy stylish swivel chair and a bulletin board to pin notes and inspiration all combine to promote productivity while allowing her space to think and dream.

2. The Creativity Cubbies Zone:

Organization was key in the space overall, and one way to fulfill this need, was to introduce IKEA's Kallax Cubby Unit. This piece not only added storage but became the centerpiece for a "Creativity Cubbies Zone." Featuring compartments that can be used for organizing books, hobbies, paired with pullout drawer inserts and rattan baskets for keeping her things neatly organized and stowed away, the Kallax is an extremely versatile storage solution.

3. The Music Zone:

My client is a budding musician with a penchant for the violin. To nurture her musical talents, I created a Music Zone for her to practice, by adding a space saving hook to hang her violin directly on the side of the kallax unit. An eye-catching music stand in an accent color from the overall design palette and an inspirational framed music quote completed this zone.

4. The Meditation Relax Zone:

I feel like all teenagers need an area to lounge and hangout. So, for quiet moments of reading, dreaming, and just hanging out, I created a cozy "Meditation Relax Zone". Big plush floor cushions and throw pillows, and a soft, little luxurious throw rug layered over the main rug define the area making this corner of the room a haven for unwinding and recharging.

5. The Dream Zone:

At the heart of the room was the "Dream Zone" – a place where she can rest and dream sweet dreams. The focal point is the stylish vibrant bedding which became the jumping off point for the design scheme. A fun boho inspired macrame wall hanging centered above a comfy bed flanked by warm wood side tables with additional storage and new coral inspired lamps complete the dream zone.

The success of this project lay in understanding the specific needs and interests of my client so that I could create zones that catered to her passions and daily activities, while maintaining a harmonious overall design.

As with any zoning project, adaptability is key. The room's layout and design elements can evolve as she grows up and her interests change. All in all, zoning a room allows you to accommodate multiple functions into one space. In this case, turning it into a place where she could thrive, create, relax, and dream.

If you're considering a room makeover, don't hesitate to explore the exciting possibilities that zoning can offer – it's the path to a truly personalized and functional space.
