Top 5 Tips to Refresh your Home For Spring
I have inadvertently inherited my parents’ Post War proclivity for holding onto and never getting rid of anything. Can that be classified as a genetic predisposition?!? Echoes of my Hoard Monster guilting me, rattling in my head, causing anxiety and panic…. “Just hold onto it a little while longer, you may need it… one day.”
I am, like most people, prone to bouts of paper pile accumulation and the junk drawer(s) that maybe sometimes overflow into shopping totes; a decidedly sad attempt to corral the clutter creep. The truth is that I can’t think as clearly when my space is in a shambles so I’m a firm believer in…..
TIP #1. The Purge. (the act not the TV series - just to be clear)
Purging, clearing and decluttering, however you do it, whatever your method, is cathartic. It frees up your mind and allows you to focus better. I know some pretty ruthless purgers but if you’re like me sometimes you need a little help (push/nudge/kick in the pants) so hiring a professional organizer might be the better way to go.
Professional Organizers, like Carolyn Brown of the Breathing Room (Insta: @breathing_r_o_o_m), can gently but firmly help you to wade through the chaos to organize your belongings so that you are “making room for what truly matters”.
With the spring cleaning done and “room to breathe” go with the spring flow, now is a great time to….
TIP #2 Paint the Walls.
Lick a fresh new coat of paint on the walls. Probably the biggest bang for your buck. A can of new paint and a little elbow grease (maybe a glass of vino or two – just saying!) one weekend or evening and you can have an immediate and cost-effective but massive impact visually on refreshing the look and feel of your space.
TIP #3 Bring in the Green.
There is something so universally uplifting about flowers and greenery. I can’t think of one thing that brightens a space or lifts a mood as quickly. Whether it’s a faux or fresh arrangement of pretty blooms or big leafy greenery, whatever your preference, flowers and plants instantly bring a touch of the outside in.
And yes, I said it. I have no problem whatsoever with a little ‘fake & bake’ plant life. 1. It can be more cost-effective than buying fresh every two to three weeks and 2. If you’re lacking a green thumb (like me) or the Martha Stewart gene (again, like me), you’re at least assured you won’t kill it. Check out Lux Art Silks’ selection and get in touch for a quote.
Like new buds, Spring is typically a symbol of new beginnings and rebirth, I like to think that it also symbolizes fresh perspectives and shifting your mindset which leads me to….
TIP #4. Rearrange. Restyle. Rework.
A very simple thing you can do to refresh your space is to rearrange the decorative items throughout; move them to new locations within the room. Restyle your bookshelves. If your books are all upright, break them up by stacking a few horizontally and adding a sculpture or decorative object to the arrangement. Rework the wall art. Try a different painting above your fireplace mantle or a hang a mirror instead.
Along the same vein as Tip#4 my final tip is….
TIP #5. The Seasonal Switch.
I can remember growing up, my mother had two sets of bedding one for the fall/winter months that was heavier and cozier and a set for the spring/summer, much lighter for those warm summer nights. That simple switch was like a Mary Poppins moment I swear! The birds started warbling a little louder and the sun was just that bit brighter. Pack the winter duvet in the closet, and switch it out for a lighter, brighter, fresher spring print.
Purge. Paint. Plants.
Rearrange. Restyle. Rework.
Switch It Up.
Bring on Spring!
